Size splitting or custom, a new lease on Life

“Is there anyone that makes custom shoes? One of my feet is 2 sizes smaller than the other.” I hear this more often than you would think. Many people have different size feet with the left foot generally being  the larger. You can deal with this by purchasing the larger size and putting an insert into the one that is slightly larger. If you have a full size difference it is still only 1/3″ difference in length and 1/8″ difference in width, so you may still be able to handle the larger size.

If your feet have a 1 1/2 or more size difference, you could still buy the larger size and supplement the smaller with insoles, but to insure your foot health, you really need to wear 2 different size shoes. What to do?

You might be able to find a fit with Diabetic shoes that have inlays that can be removed. Generally this is not a fashionable option.

Most people buy the shoe in 2 different sizes and discard the shoes they can’t wear.  This is expensive and not a very good sustainable option unless you can find a person with the opposite sizing and share with them.

Enter Nordstrom‘s with a great policy. As long as you have a 1 1/2 or more size discrepancy, they will fit the 2 feet appropriately and only charge for one pair. This policy is for all shoes and available online, although online you need to buy 2 pairs, return the mismatched pair and get a refund. Apparently the original Mrs. Nordstrom had polio and needed two different sizes, so the company that began as a shoe store, extended the service to their customers in need. This is a great service, part of what has set Nordstrom apart in the retail industry.

Birkenstock is another shoe company that offers 2 size splitting policies.

You could also look into custom shoes. As digital last creation evolves this may become and increasingly more affordable option.

RIP David Bowie, my favorite performer and a major influence on my life. David Bowie gave me the courage to be different and the confidence to continually transform on my terms throughout my life. He was brilliant till the very end and oh yeah, the shoes! Guess I got some of my fashion & shoe aesthetic from him too. These babies are dead on trend right now. Wish I could get a pair and wear them in memoriam.

Walking in Heels

It’s the holidays, time for walking in heels. It doesn’t come naturally to many women. Here are few tips to help you walk with grace, elegance and attitude in your holiday best.

Sky High Stiletto

First, find a pair of sky-high heels that work well with your foot. Comfort is all in the vamp. Try on a bunch of brands and find one or two the fit your foot. Don’t worry about the price point. Shoedazzle offers a great vamp for me at a very affordable price. Once you find the brand, make sure to find a style you LOVE.

Get the correct size. Remember that shoe lasts come in many sizes, but stores purchase only a limited selection. My foot measures a 6 1/2 D, but I have to buy  a 7 B because most stores only carry whole and half sizes in B.

The Wedge

If it is your first time out, steer clear of stilettos for your maiden voyage. Start with a wedge that offers good stability. If you are a novice try a 3″ heel or choose a platform.

Once you get these babies home make sure you scuff up the soles. This will help you avoid slipping. Next, test them out on the rug, the tile, the hardwood floor, the sidewalk, the driveway, the grass, as many surfaces as you can find. You will need to negotiate each surface a little differently.

Stand tall, shoulders back, hips and knees relaxed. Remember that book on the head routine? Step forward with confidence, head held high, heel first and move heel-toe, heel-toe in small steps, shorter than your natural stride. Feeling a bit awkward? Deep breath, start again and practice, practice, practice.

Sit whenever you can and show us your shoes. Elongate your torso, sitting elegantly tall and either demurely cross your legs at the ankles or display your gorgeous gams with a cross at the knee. Add a little swing for attitude and you know you’ve graduated.
